STU LIVINGSTON

Director, Spider-Man: Freshman Year (Marvel Studios Animation)

Stu Livingston (he/him) is an Emmy Award-winning director and story artist working in animation for over 15 years. Born in Pago Pago, American Samoa, he moved with his family at age 6 to Bakersfield, CA, where he was raised. Following high school, he studied Art at Bakersfield College then transferred to California State University, Northridge, where he received a Bachelors of Arts in Animation.

As a story artist, he went on to work on many highly-acclaimed shows including Futurama (Rough Draft Studios), Steven Universe (Cartoon Network), Clarence (Cartoon Network) and The Loud House (Nickelodeon). In 2016, he embarked as a first-time director, co-directing Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie at Nickelodeon. Later, in 2018, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement for his storyboards on The Jungle Movie. His later directing credits include The Owl House (Disney), Craig of the Creek (Cartoon Network) and most recently Spider-Man: Freshman Year (Marvel).

Adjacent to his career in animation, Stu Livingston has published multiple stories in comics including Rosy Outlook (2023) and Dream, Dream, Dream (2019). His work has also appeared in numerous nationally-published comics anthologies such as Tamamo the Fox Maiden and Other Asian Stories (Iron Circus, 2019), Explorer: The Mystery Boxes (Abrams, 2012), and FLIGHT (Villard, 2010). He has also spent time teaching at CalArts and The Concept Design Academy.

As a child, his love for animation and storytelling was stoked by an early exposure to the films of Studio Ghibli, most notably the western-distributed dub of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind titled “Warriors of the Wind.” He notes The Simpsons, Dragonball, and Square-Enix’s role-playing games including Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger as other significant influences.

He currently resides in Los Angeles with his two cats.
