THE COALITION OF ASIAN PACIFICS IN ENTERTAINMENT (CAPE) AND FOX ENTERTAINMENT GROUP PROUDLY ANNOUNCE WINNERS AND FINALISTS FOR THE 7 TH ANNUAL CAPE FOUNDATION NEW WRITERS AWARD

Winners Receive Cash and Major Exclusive Entertainment Opportunities

LOS ANGELES (August 22, 2006) – The highly anticipated announcement of the winners and finalists of the 7 thAnnual CAPE Foundation New Writers Awards, sponsored by the Fox Entertainment Group, for Feature Film & Television has finally arrived. Winners of the CAPE Foundation New Writers Awards each receive a cash prize of $2,500.00 (U.S.), the latest Final Draft Professional Script Writing Software and a staged reading of their script, in addition to opportunities to meet and/or pitch to seasoned entertainment executives.

The winner of the Feature Film Writing Award is Harvard and USC Film School graduate, Young Il Kim for his script HYUNG’S OVERTURE. Kim is a member of the Independent Writers Caucus of the Writers Guild of America.  His feature screenplay, HYUNG’S OVERTURE, has also won the 2006 Bluecat Screenplay Competition, been selected into the Film Independent’s 2005 Screenwriters Lab and recently has been announced as a participant in the Korean Film Council Retreat.  HYUNG’S OVERTURE was also a finalist for the Sundance Filmmakers Lab, the Austin Screenwriting Competition and a semi-finalist in the Chesterfield.  

Feature Film Writing first runner up is Harvard graduate and Columbia University MFA Filmmaker Soman Chainani for his script LOVE MARRIAGE. Second Runner up for Feature Film Writing is University of California-Berkeley graduate Kevin Chatupornpitak with his script HELVETE PARK.

Winner of the Television Writing Award is the award-winning and published writer Lucy Wang for her script titled WITHOUT A TRACE: BORN AGAIN. Ms. Wang has already sold an original comedy pilot to Disney, cooked with Tyler Florence called Food 911, and is featured in Charlene Shih’s video installation 12 STEPS TO SUCCESS FOR ARTISTS IN LOS ANGELES. Her awards include a grant from the Berrilla Kerr Foundation; Best New Play from the Chilcote Foundation; James Thurber Fellowship; Hewlett Honorary Fellow; artistic residencies at Djerassi, Atlantic Center for the Arts and MacDowell Colony; Roger L. Stevens Award, Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays.  Wang is a member of the DGA, PEN, LPWT, WGAW, and serves as a vice chair for the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights.  

Television Writing first runner up is Romanian-born Paul Catrinescu for his script LAW & ORDER: LEGS. Second runner up for Television Writing is Pitzer College graduate and actorBruce Locke with his original script THE ADVENTURES OF MUSASHI.

Co-Chairs of the 2006 CFNWA are Literary Manager Angela Cheng Caplan and Writer/Executive Producer for SpikeTV/MTV Networks Leo Chu. The awards are coordinated by Jessica Tscha.

CAPE’s Board of Advisors include distinguished executives and artists such as Ang Lee, John Woo, Terence Chang, Dean Devlin, Warrington Hudlin, David Henry Hwang, Lou Diamond Phillips, Richard Sakai, B.D. Wong, Chris Lee, Fritz Friedman, Janet Yang and Teddy Zee.
