COALITION OF ASIAN PACIFICS IN ENTERTAINMENT (CAPE) FOUNDATION
ANNOUNCE START OF 2005 NEW WRITERS AWARDS. Submissions
Now Being Accepted For The Sixth Annual Awards Sponsored By FOX
Entertainment Group
April 5, 2005, Los Angeles, CA – The Coalition
of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) Foundation, Inc. (www.capeusa.org),
a non-profit arts organization, announced today that FOX Entertainment
Group will again sponsor the sixth annual CAPE Foundation New Writers
Award, with submissions now available through CAPE’s official
website.
“CAPE is dedicated to the continued advancement of Asians
and Pacific Islanders in entertainment, both behind the scenes and
in front of the cameras,” said Cindy Sison, President of CAPE.
“With the lack of Asian and Asian-American talent on the screen
today, there has never been a greater need for writers of color
to tell their stories and for diverse talent to breathe life into
them on the screen. The CAPE Foundation New Writers Award has become
a proven measure of success for future filmmakers of Hollywood.”
The 2001 CAPE Foundation New Writers Award winner for screenwriting,
Alice Wu’s SAVING FACE, is now a completed feature produced
by Teddy Zee (a CAPE Board of Advisor). SAVING FACE is being distributed
by Sony Pictures Classics and recently screened in competition at
this year’s Sundance Film Festival. This year’s writing
competition features a Television Writing Award and a Screenwriting
Award. Both are open to all previously unproduced writers of Asian
or Pacific Islander descent.
“FOX is committed to promoting diversity in both the business
and creative sectors of the entertainment industry,” said
Mitsy Wilson, Senior Vice President of Diversity of FOX Entertainment
Group. “Our continued sponsorship of CAPE’s New Writers
Award emphasizes our commitment to this goal and underscores the
importance of CAPE’s programs which have proven to be a valuable
resource for Asians and Pacific Islanders.”
The two winners of the CAPE Foundation New Writers Award will each
receive a cash prize of $2500, writing software, a staged reading
of their script, and opportunities to meet and pitch to a panel
of seasoned entertainment executives. The first Screenwriting Award
was given in 1999, and the first Television Writing Award was given
in 2001.
Joining as Co-Chairs of this year’s CAPE Foundation New Writers
Awards are film producer and actor Jusak Yang Bernhard, head of
animation and executive producer for Spike TV Leo Chu, and noted
literary agent Angela Cheng Caplan.
